Phil343 of orphanages and forced spreading of Eurocentric values , at the expense of Kenyan children ’ s social and cultural capital . Several studies point at missionaries and colonial governments introducing the institutional care model , providing healthcare and education ( Chege and Ucembe , 2020 , p . 3 ). The novelty of this model in African communities must be contrasted with previous treatment of African orphans . The ‘ Ubuntu ’ concept promotes a family-based approach , where children who lost one or both parents remain in care of another family member , maintaining important cultural and social ties ( Kanjanda , 2014 , p . 333 ). This concept was eradicated with the introduction of Western missions in the 19th century , spreading education , religion and medical services ( Ahmed and Potter , 2006 , in Madziva and Chinouya , 2017 , p . 1127 ). Besides severing natural social and cultural ties of African children , these orphanages were modelled after similar Western institutions , thus enforcing Western education ( Chege and Ucembe , 2020 , p . 3 ). Colonialist education focused on European capitalist values , including racism and Western cultural dominance ( Rodney , 1972 , pp . 240-241 ). Besides , the Agape programme collaborates with Western-led orphanages – such as St . Dorcas , mentioned in a volunteer ’ s review ( Hayden , 2018 ). St . Dorcas is ran and supported by H & A Marketing , York , paying all staff and overseeing finances ( About the Orphanage ). Moreover , all children follow Western Christian traditions such as Sunday School and church ( Category Archives : Uncategorized ). H & A establishes European values at St . Dorcas through this unequal relationship , robbing Kenyan children of their own culture . By supporting Western orphanage concepts instead of family-based care , Agape alienates Kenyan children from important aspects of their communities , replacing their cultural identity with Western , capitalist , Christian ideals . The programme structure deprives orphans ’ of their social and cultural capital , which is repurposed for extraction by Western volunteers , as discussed in the following
