COMM323 Issues in Photography : Academic Posters
For the COMM323 module student photographers Ellie , Emma , and Neave created visual essays presenting their responses to iconic images , each embodying a modern day interpretation of the photo .
ELLIE BEECHAM , co-editor of this anthology and a 2020 graduate from Communication and Media , re-took her chosen image . The models ’ eyes bear straight at the viewer , though hidden by their captivating but empty expressions is their reliance on technology : the wires from which run around them like life support . Ellie shows us how , like a toy hand grenade , something that appears to have no immediate danger , can become deadly in another , more psychological way .
EMMA RUTHERFORD chose to update the very image itself , rather than recapturing it . Using digital manipulation , she retains the themes of conflict and struggle , violence and humanity , and gives it a new , smiling face ; one she says is no improvement or solution , but rather a new mask . In her piece , we see a considerate mind behind the ‘ lens ’, and a nurtured , mature passion for images and art which make the piece so universal .
NEAVE RITCHIE chose to re-take Martin Parr ’ s 1984 ‘ New Brighton ’. The result retains Parr ’ s original contrast of the bleak and the carefree , giving it a modern consciousness .
