On this account we would again have to forget about the advanced directive and assume the contemporaneous values to be the right ones to follow for the benefit of this patient . In real life , say in an operation , realistically you have every chance to back out of the procedure before anything happens . In this scenario for Margo , it may not be ideal since these values could change from day to day , week to week depending on the rate and power of the disease , but the crucial point remains ; whilst Margo is a valuer , we must , as close as we can , allow her to exercise her autonomy through the affirmation of the things that she values . Ultimately , Margo can go eating her sandwiches and enjoying her painting - for there is no reason to respect the advanced directive that another person created .
