COMM232: Public Relations Cultures and Media Writing Practices introduces students to the theory
and practice of promotional and media writing. On the following pages you’ll see a promotional
piece about some of Liverpool’s cultural sites, written by second-year BA English Literature and
Communication & Media student Zirong Lyu, and an exhibition review written by Jiawei Du,
who is taking BA English and Communication Studies.
A hippie day in Pool: finding hidden treasures
Whether you are looking for some post-modern inspirations or just want
to stroll casually in Liverpool, Oldham Street is definitely a cool place
you should visit. Located between St Luke’s Church and John Moores
University, the Oldham is famous for being ‘bothered’ by countless Graffiti
designs. If you are lucky enough, you may even see some rebellious
artists working on their projects in a cosy afternoon! There are also many
interesting shops only steps away from the street. Reid of Liverpool is
one of them. Just like Liverpool’s personality, this second-hand bookshop
follows its own principles of simplicity and the voice of freedom. The
shop only opens for half a day and closes on every Sunday. There is a
surprisingly wide range of literature categories. From Victorian gothic
novels to Caribbean folklores, student hipsters can always find one that
interests them. If you plan to visit Liverpool Cathedral, what about going
further to Cains Brewery Village? Located in Parliament Street, the whole
village is surrounded by red brick buildings. If you are familiar with TV
series Peaky Blinders, you will find its theme bar by the heart of the site—
historic Cains Brewery building. When the brewery was founded in 1858,
