Sonder: Youth Mental Health Stories of Struggle & Strength | Page 49

come together as if it was all a big puzzle that only time could solve. My emotions were a reflection of the injustice that was just beneath the surface of my knowledge at the time. Stemming from my childhood of being so peaceful and compassionate, to transitioning into my teenage years of displacement, it all made sense. My inner struggles lead me to discover my calling, my true passion and purpose in this world.
I realized that these narratives of who I was were not really me. Instead of trying to be something I was not, I finally answered to the call of revolution. I ditched the“ friends” who lead me down a path of destruction, and instead found comrades who were also strengthening their minds, bodies, and spirits. Upon my discovery of the corruption in the world, it lead me into a phase of cognitive dissonance. My family helped pull me out of this dark rabbit hole and cope with the truths we were discovering together. I wanted to take action and spread awareness. I began community organizing and cultivating a healing approach to the society we as youth are facing. This paradigm shift I encountered took a great deal of strength to remain resilient in this new journey of mine.
It was through my education at Naropa University where I was able to learn how to come to a place where I was now able to heal myself and others. All of the lessons life has taught me lead me to coming to this place of ancient wisdom and understanding. Gratitude replaced my grief. Inspiration replaced my anger. And now everything has come together. Through peace-building, meditation and yoga I have learned that we must be the authors of our own story. To live freely I learned to take off my mask and allow my true spirit to soar, enjoying the open skies and the endless possibilities life has to offer. My reflection is mirroring my soul and I finally feel whole. I can now appreciate my struggles for they have lead to amazing triumphs. Gratitude for my loved ones is always the light that brightens my days and keeps me going. I am not a single identity but a complex and beautiful being of light that made it through all of the dark places along the way.
This is my true story. I am an author, an artist, a creator. I am a dancer, a motivator. I can do anything I set my mind to, a Capricorn with high values. I am a rebel and a revolutionary. I am a hippie at heart, a yogi, a healer and a warrior of compassion. My actions will define me and I will define my future. This is my true story, a story I am writing in hopes to inspire others and affirm my journey. ●
