6. I think my favorite character in the first book is Marcus. He’s a character I wasn’t really sure about at the beginning but have definitely developed a love for, especially as the series continues.
7. It is refreshing to read novels with diverse characters, not only in ethnic background and religion but also in sexual orientation. Because let’s be realistic here people….that’s real life. I enjoyed that this book had very openly gay characters who were not ashamed of who they were. It was just a normal part of the story. I think more novels need to follow in this direction.
8. Finally, I enjoyed the female empowerment throughout the book. The fact that Diana is a strong, intelligent, educated, working-class female who finds a man who appreciates all those qualities in her was something that resonated with me. Diana does make changes for Matthew but that’s also because she accepts who he is as a person and works with him. They are a compatible pair.
Overall, I really did enjoy not only the first book, but the whole series. It’s a historical, invigorating novel with so many different aspects that I didn’t see coming. It was never dull and I always found myself needing to know what would happen next. It’s an exciting, uplifting, and suspenseful novel that I truly hope you read and enjoy.
1. I absolutely loved ALL the characters, even the bad ones. The main characters are very real and easy to understand (the book offers multiple perspectives). The side characters play just as much of an important part of the main characters do and to me, that’s important. I liked the bad characters as well because the story gives a sense of who they are and why they are doing what they’re doing.
2. I loved the historical references. It was as overwhelming as I thought it was going to be but overall it was actually a nice quality to have. I would consider this book a mix between historical fiction and science fiction which don’t normally go together but here they definitely do.
3. This book was easy to get into. In some books there is so much world building that has to take place first or maybe a LOT of background on characters, which in turn, drags the book. This didn’t happen here. You pick this book up and are pretty much right in the story.
4. This is completely off topic of the book, but it’s being turned into a BBC TV show! Some actors from movies and other TV shows that you may be familiar with are playing the main characters. It’s still in the early stages of filming and I’m not sure when it’s going to be released but exciting all the same. I also LOVE Teresa Palmer who will be playing Diana, so keep an eye out!
5. Being the Harry Potter fan that I am, it’s nice to have a sort of “wizards do exist” kind of world with the muggles (non-magic folk) having no idea about their existence, but this time with adults.
