Design on a Dime

Randi Garrett

Spring is the perfect time for a DIY decorating project. Take advantage of the rainy weather with an indoor craft. Soon the sun will be shining, and you’ll want to be outdoors!

My favorite spring craft so far this year was the idea of your very own Charles Snellings (aka Sonder’s Editor-in-Chief). On a May day, we took a trip to Michael’s to pick up everything we needed to brighten up our apartment doors with homemade wreaths! We were a little nervous upon arrival, since wreaths like the ones we were planning to make were being sold for over 60 dollars each. Thankfully, by the time we gathered all of our materials, we had each spent between 10 and 20 dollars.

What you’ll need:

- Any size grapevine wreath

- Any style of faux flowers you like

- Green wire

- Wire cutters

If you purchase flowers in bunches, like I did, you will need to use the wire cutters to cut them into smaller pieces. You can lay these pieces out any way you like on your wreath. Then, you will use the green wire to tie the pieces onto the wreath. Don’t worry about making this part perfect. Just a little bit of wire wrapped around the flowers will hold them onto the wreath, and the wire isn’t noticeable.

You can cover your wreath in flowers, or leave the grapevine wreath showing. The visible wreath gives a rustic look, and as you can see, either style looks great. We learned that less flowers (like Charles’ wreath with white hydrangeas) require less wire and can be done more quickly, while more flowers take a bit longer, but neither project took more than about a half hour. And when finished, you have a homemade wreath to proudly hang on your door for spring and summer!
