● Tell us what The Cohabit is all about.

The Cohabit is the story of couples that live together outside of traditional marriage, but really it’s about the changing nature of relationships today.

● What inspired The Cohabit?

After hearing Randy Carroll’s podcast on cohabitation, I had to interview him about his work. Randy uses his podcast to tell a story about an ended relationship with a retrospective look on the impact that living together had on the couple. The story feels deeply personal while still addressing the rising number of people who cohabit, the reasons people cohabit, and the stigma that cohabitation still has among many, as well as how that stigma affects families when parents and their children disagree. We had a lot of questions for Randy on his unique approach to both podcasting and cohabitation.

The Cohabit was inspired by several things. First, I did live with someone and we actually recorded our experience, though the couple you hear is scripted and between actors. I’m also a naturally curious person so whenever I’m about to undertake a new life direction, I like to think about the greater social consequences of that course. And it was especially relevant because I knew my family wouldn’t agree with what we were doing. I discovered that cohabitation has increased 1500% in a few decades, a number no other social or cultural shift has ever come close to in such a short period of time. However, I found that we lacked a space that really understood that change and brought it together in a cohesive way. So, when I had the experience of losing my partner and being left with the tapes of a failed relationship, I knew there was a story there.
