Gentlemen's Threads
Formal wear is more confined, tailored, and there is not much room for playing around. There are different degrees of formal wear. I know for some formal can be just a blazer and slacks with a blazer and tie, but then formal is a tuxedo and a black tie event. Those two will differ on the time of day. Earlier in the day you can do the blazer and slacks, but the later into the evening and more formal occasion the better you will be to wear a tuxedo. Think 2 or 3 piece suits. Tailored and crisp—these will always be in effect for formalwear. These are for weddings, and special events like maybe the theatre. Formal wear can be intriguing. There’s different fits For example some formal wear pants are cropped at the ankle bone making it more modern. This also brings a bit of individuality in a typically stuffy attire. That’s the biggest misconception about formalwear—it doesn’t have to be stuffy. Opt for some modern options like gray or navy instead of black, a printed tie, maybe even cropped pants. Formal wear typically is stuffy, but it can be fun.
Streetwear to me is harder to write about. I am more of that preppy professional, but I’m starting to enjoy streetwear more and more. Streetwear to me is about layers and textures, but it is not only limited to that. Streetwear is the time to try out new trends. Maybe it’s the neckerchief from the last issue, or maybe something else you have been seeing, such as different length shirts layered over one another for dimension. Maybe some off colors that typically wouldn’t go together fit in streetwear because it’s all about the confidence. Streetwear is about breaking the rules. I think one thing I LOVE about streetwear is that it is rooted in expressing your individuality and being confident. Writing about the neckerchief before I actually tried it was a little rough, but since I’ve tried it I’ve noticed my outfits with it are a little less preppy and more artistic and creative which is a different part of my personality. So streetwear can be summed up in, do what you feeling daring to do, be confident, and experiment. You may like something you wouldn’t have thought you could.
In the last issue I talked about how to dress for the office, business casual, and so in that list of different levels of attire I thought we should keep exploring those. So this time I decided to cover not 1but 2 of those. I’m pitting formal wear against streetwear since they are opposites. Formal wear is for more special occasions and street wear is for everyday. So totally opposites even in occasions, let alone in aesthetics. These fit perfectly together, and here at Sonder we are using this to launch a new component of the magazine, Streetwear. So get your clothes out and hit the streets. Hashtag us at #SongerMag or tag us on instagram to be maybe be featured.
