You may choose an androgynous style to better suit your personal identity, to blur gender lines, or simply for comfort. Regardless of your reason, your first summer choosing to not wear a summer dress to those warm weather weddings may be a challenge. This choice can also be a statement about your identity or simply about your confidence to set trends and not follow the gendered expectations for formal events. Last year was my first summer rejecting the “ladies” section in favor of clothes more suited to my personal identity, and it was the most comfortable I’ve ever been at a wedding. If you’re having a hard time deciding what to wear other than a dress to all those weddings you have on your calendar this summer, here are some ideas to get started:
Tops—Oxford shirts are the best androgynous top to wear to a formal or semi-formal event. Stick to light colors for the season or even a subtle print. If the wedding is outside, you may want to find a short-sleeve shirt. If the end of your sleeves are too wide, cuff them once or twice for a cleaner look. If the wedding is inside, try a long-sleeve and roll the sleeves.
