There ’ s a special connection between the city of Portsmouth and the artful tales of Sherlock Holmes penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle . A near-bankrupt Doyle moved to the city in 1882 to set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove . Holmes was created at that address , initially to help pay the bills . But the tales took on a life of their own that have transcended time .
