What’s Your Why?

When I first began rescuing sex-
trafficked children, I did anything
within reason to earn money, both to
support my wife, Gail, and me, and
also to contribute to the ministry we
ran. I have rarely received a salary
from a secular job in the 35 years
since I founded JOY International. I
have simply done whatever I could to
keep my family afloat and the ministry
operational.
For a while, however, I was involved
with a network marketing company,
and I slowly, methodically climbed
the earnings ladder. It didn’t take
a genius to realize that success at
work would increase the balance in
my bank account, which in turn would
enable me to rescue more girls. My
only motivation in making as much
money as possible was to support my

ministry.
One year the company held a
conference, and because I was having
a pretty good financial run, they
invited me to speak. They asked me to
talk about the “why” behind success.
Specifically, they wanted me to stir
all the employees to ask themselves,
“What’s my why?” They wanted each
person to ponder why he or she wanted
to be successful.
