her cookies myself for the first few
months after my fourth child was
born. This is a job that Erin can do
from home that merges her passion
and gifting—and allows her to not
miss time with her son.

other talents such as painting,
pottery, and ceramics might want

business ventures. When Illinois mom

FIND FREELANCE WORK
W
hen Will and I were trying
to make it on a low income, I
began freelance writing for my local
newspaper. The gig helped me to
rehone my rusty writing skills, and it
also eventually led to my starting a
blog (which became our family’s main
income source a few years later). I
have also done freelance editing work,
and my husband has done freelance
photography.
If you have graphic-design skills,
check out freelance work on sites
like Upwork or Fiverr (fiverr.com),
or try selling your designs on Etsy.
Bloggers and small-business owners
pay freelance designers to create
graphics like invitations, event
posters, printables, e-book covers,
and more. It never hurts to approach
a business owner and offer your
services.
ACTION STEP: Pitch your local
newspaper editor or your favorite
blogger about freelance writing or
editing. Check job listings at Upwork.
