Record hot summer

Spanish champion
Nineteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz ( pictured ) from Murcia made history last month with his win over Casper Ruud at the US Tennis Open final . Claiming his first Grand Slam title made him the youngest player to hold the top ranking in history . He is also the youngest Grand Slam champion since his fellow countryman Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005 .
Contract awarded
The contract to build the third section of Nerja ’ s new cycle lane was awarded to the local company Transportes Antelo last month . The € 495,000 project , financed 80 % from European funds , will see the lane extended along the N-340 from the Oasis de Capistrano roundabout to the entrance of the Barranco de Maro . When completed in seven months , the lane will stretch 2.2 kilometres east from the Burriana roundabout .
Mobile payment
Paying for travelling on public transport using a mobile phone became a reality in Rincón de la Victoria at the end of last month and will eventually spread throughout Andalucía . The regional government has a € 1.6 million budget from European funds to progress the initiative . The Minister of Development , Articulation of the Territory and Housing , Marifrán Carazo , described it as , “ a payment system with a vision of the future and with users in mind .”
The summer of 2022 was the warmest in Spain since records began in 1961 . The average temperature in August was more than 2 ° C higher than normal , according to Aemet , the Spanish State Meteorological Agency .
Summer started early with a heatwave in June and in the three following months the country averaged 2.2 ° C above normal levels . The national average in August was 24.71 ° C making it the hottest since 2003 .

Power plans

Power hungry industries such as steel production could cut themselves off from the national power grid for three hours per day this winter , according to the government .
In exchange , companies would receive compensation as the European energy crisis begins to bite .
Energy minister Teresa Ribera ( pictured ) said last month that plans were under consideration to enable such businesses voluntarily to reduce consumption or cut themselves off completely for up to three hours . She added that the requirement to give their suppliers just 15 minutes notice of their intention would offer flexibility and therefore reduce demand during peak hours .
