I’ve been working at the Rebeccah Curtis Wellness Centre for
nearly a year now providing reiki, reflexology and massage
treatments. Reiki is the therapy that my clients ask about most,
as many people are still unsure as to what a treatment entails. I
thought that it might be a good idea to answer the most
common questions here so that everyone can have a better
understanding of this amazing therapy.
Do you need to stop seeing a regular
doctor or psychologist to receive a reiki
treatment?
No. Reiki works in conjunction with your regular treatment
and it is recommended that if you have a medical or
psychological condition you see a licensed health care
professional in addition to receiving your reiki treatments.
Reiki energy works in harmony with all other forms of healing,
including drugs, surgery and other forms of alternative
medicine.
What exactly is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing, working to balance the
chakra energy centres in thebody.
But isn’t that a bit ‘airy fairy’?
Not at all. We all know that we eat to produce energy for our
bodies. We need that energy for everything we do, breathing,
eating, sleeping, walking, working and any other activity we
perform in our everyday lives. When we have emotional or
physical trauma it can block the smooth flow of the energy and
that impairs the function of our bodies. Reiki works to remove the
blockages and allow the body to heal itself and function properly.
Can you treat pregnant women and
babies?
Reiki energy can only do good and it adjusts to the condition
of the body. It can benefit a mother and her unborn child and
also be used to aid childbirth. Babies love reiki and it’s very
healthy for them. The reiki energy adjusts to the size of their
bodies.
How does it work?
It involves a transference of energy through the reiki
practitioner to the client, with the practitioner either laying
their hands on the client or holding them just above the body.
What kind of experience will I have?
The reiki experience differs from person to person but usually
involves a feeling of deep relaxation, often leading to clients
falling asleep during the treatment or experiencing improved
sleep afterwards. As a Reiki treatment encourages you to
release anxiety, tension and any negative feelings, it also leaves
you feeling calm and peaceful and often with a sense of
glowing radiance and wellbeing. You should leave feeling
refreshed and with a more balanced outlook.
Do you need to be undressed for the
treatment?
No, you lie fully clothed on a massage table (or chair if this is
difficult for the client), close your eyes and relax.
What sort of conditions does reiki treat?
Reiki is an extremely relaxing, enjoyable treatment that works
well with emotional trauma and mental health issues, such as
anxiety and depression. It has also been used to help treat
minor conditions such as head and stomach aches as well as
serious illnesses and conditions such as cancer, heart disease,
chronic pain, infertility, neurodegenerative disorders and
autism. Reiki also has a positive effect on the side effects of
regular medical treatments. This includes the negative effects
of chemotherapy and post-operative pain as well as speeding
up the healing rate and the time needed to stay in hospital.
Are there any side effects from a reiki
treatment?
So do I need a home or hospital visit for
this? Although in the majority of cases, you will leave feeling
relaxed and uplifted, there are occasions where you may
experience what is called a healing crisis. This is where the
toxins in the body, that have been released by the reiki, are
expelled from the body. This can lead to feelings of fatigue,
weakness and head or stomach aches. If you experience this,
get more rest, drink more water and eat lighter meals. The
body is cleansing as part of the healing process so it is a good
sign.
No. Reiki energy can travel distances, in a similar way to Is there any scientific validation for reiki?
Yes, research has been carried out for some time to validate
the usefulness of reiki in healing and to show that healing over
distance does occur.
So where can I go for a reiki treatment?
Always make sure you go to a qualified reiki practitioner. I am
qualified at Reiki Master level and practice from The Rebeccah
Curtis Wellness Centre at Laguna Beach.
