Scruffs! In addition, visitors can participate in raffles, browse several stalls offering a diverse selection of handicrafts and delicacies, as well as food and drink. Handlers and dogs, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) is pleased to announce that our annual dog show Scruffs will be held on October 14 at the Plaza de España in Nerja from 12 noon until 4pm, once again with the great support of the Foreign Residents’ Department of the Nerja Town Hall. All dogs owners are invited to enter their pets in one or more of the 12 classes to be judged during the afternoon. Entry is €5 per category or €12 for three categories with registration beginning at 12 noon. *In the event of inclement weather the show will be moved to the following Sunday. Punta Lara CAS Quiz Pedigree and non-pedigree puppies (under one year), dogs and bitches will be judged in six separate classes, starting at 1.00pm. The fun classes will include a search for the dog with the waggiest tail, the best “sit and stay”, and the dog that is most obedient or shows off the best trick. Importantly, the judges will also be asked to choose the best dog and best bitch from dogs which have been rescued and are now in new homes with loving owners. CAS is looking forward to the monthly quiz hosted by Mark and company at the Punta Lara Bar. We would like to invite our regular quizzers and all newcomers to a fun evening which raises much needed funds for abandoned dogs and cats in our area. The first one will be held on October 19 at 7.30pm and will continue every third Friday of each month throughout the winter and spring. Food and drinks are available at the bar and advanced booking is recommended, call Mark on 635 369 673. Happy Tales CAS has been kept on its’ toes caring for and re-homing several batches of puppies this summer. Rudy, the last of the six one-day old pups that were found in Maro back in March, finally travelled to his Rudy new family in the UK on September 14. The survival of such young waifs is a testament to the dedication of the CAS volunteers who bottle fed each one every two hours around the clock for a month until they were weaned and could be boarded in kennels. Not only did all six pups thrive but the first five found their forever homes fairly quickly in Spain. Rudy was the last only because he required a microchip, passport and full vaccines to travel to the UK. Featured Dog of the Month: Portia Portia was adopted from CAS over ten years ago. She lived a good life with her owner during that time but, sadly, her owner died last month so Portia is looking for a new home. The owner suffered from a memory related illness so Portia has been overfed for the last couple of years but she is otherwise in very good health and is currently on a diet while she is in kennels. Portia Portia is a lovely, medium sized female who enjoys being around people. She also gets along with other dogs and is curious about cats but we do not think she would hurt one. 54
