Beach cleared
Málaga ’ s Terminal 2 to get makeover
Municipal workers and police from Nerja have cleared a shanty town close to the beach at Maro , removing 1,500 kilos of rubbish by boat . The move follows a recent incident when a group fishing at La Caleta de Maro were assaulted and insulted by people living rough there . One victim suffered an injury and another was bitten by a dog .
Bullring project
The provincial government has put out to tender the first phase of conservation work at Málaga ’ s La Malagueta bullring . The € 345,000 , five-month project aims to prevent damp causing further deterioration to walls and floors . The 140-year-old complex is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest under Spain ’ s Historical Heritage Law .
Cycling thief
An 18-year-old suspected of theft from tourists in Torre del Mar tried to escape by bicycle last month . When police learned of the incidents , they chased him along the road towards Nerja and found him in possession of a ring , four mobile phones , two pairs of sunglasses and € 32 in cash amongst other goods . When spotted , he tried to escape but was blocked by pedestrians .
Animal cruelty
An investigation launched in the province of Málaga in January has resulted in 316 animals rescued and 50 people charged with abuse . Last month ’ s report from the Guardia Civil includes graphic descriptions of animal cruelty . Around 200 inspections carried out by Seprona at kennels , animal shelters , farms and zoos resulted in 580 administrative violations for lack of food , water , sanitation or health care .
Bridge jumping
Bungy jumping from bridges in Andalucía may be legalised by the end of the year . The sport was banned after the death of a 23-year-old British tourist who fell to her death from Tablate bridge in Granada . New legislation governing the activity is expected to be debated by the regional parliament in Sevilla during September .
Terminal 2 ( T-2 ) at Málaga ’ s airport is to be remodelled at a cost of € 8.4 million . The deadline for applications to tender for the 20-month project closed last month and the project is expected to be completed by late 2019 or early 2020 .
T-2 opened on November 30 , 1991 , and was given the name Pablo Ruiz Picasso by the city of Málaga . It handles mainly flights from non- Schengen countries and from those countries which are neither Schengen nor EU members .
The make-over will bring T-2 up to the standard of T-3 which opened in 2010 and will include complete repainting , and the replacement of the flooring , false ceilings , public lavatories , heating and air conditioning systems . Fire detection systems are to be modernised while heat pumps and cold air generators on the roof between T-1 and T-2 are to be replaced because of their age .
Málaga to pioneer anti-terror plan
The city of Málaga has been selected by the Government to develop a pioneering plan to detect and prevent radicalisation . The aim is to detect and check such behaviour in all areas of society , including jihadism , on the premise that those drawn in are victims .
The choice of Málaga follows the city council ’ s work with the Intelligence Centre against Terrorism and Organized Crime , part of the Interior Ministry , and will contribute to a National Strategic Plan to Combat Violent Radicalisation .
The aim is to raise awareness and promote social cohesion , to improve coexistence , to respect religious freedom and to avoid marginalisation and violent radicalism . It has the support of Málaga University which
With the volume of passengers constantly increasing - in July , the airport broke its record of handling two million passengers in a month - the project will be designed for minimum disruption . The airport ’ s operator Aena says T-2 will not close during the work , even if it means extending contractors ’ deadlines or working overnight .
In a separate 13-month project , Aena has allocated € 4.4 million for upgrading the airport ’ s parking facilities for travellers , as well as for airport staff and car rental companies . The work is expected to be completed by early 2019 .

Four working groups were established some months ago and numerous local organisations are involved , while an advisory council has been formed from members of the Forum for Peace in the Mediterranean .
There are around 150 nationalities represented within the population of the city of Málaga and the city council has worked for many years to promote coexistence and multiculturalism . The initiative now coming together , known formally as the Transversal Plan , further commits Málaga to work and provide opportunities for all people , regardless of race , origin or religion .
