Málaga ’ s Expo hopes continue

Málaga is amongst the final five contenders who are bidding to play host to Expo 2027 . News came last month that the city has passed an exhaustive examination by the evaluation committee of the Bureau International des Expositions ( BIE ) which confirmed it as a finalist candidate .
Málaga thus remains in the running , along with Minnesota in the USA , Phuket in Thailand , Belgrade in Serbia and San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina . The official declaration stated that all five possible venues had been found to be “ feasible , viable and in line with the rules of the BIE .” The final decision will be made in June when members at the BIE ’ s 172nd General Assembly will select the winning proposal in a secret vote .
Málaga plans to promote the event with the slogan , “ The Urban Era : Towards the Sustainable City ” and intends to focus on the UN ’ s sustainability goals . The event would run for 93 days from June to
September 2027 at an estimated cost of € 859 million , which includes the construction of a site at Buenavista in the city ’ s south-western outskirts .
Some 3.1 million people would be expected to visit the site , with many expected to return at least twice , generating € 136 million in ticket sales . Total revenue from the event is estimated at € 321 million .
Costs would include € 602 million for site construction and € 256 million operating expenses . The project would generate around 300 jobs in the years leading up to opening , and 3,000 jobs during the exhibition . Subsidies of € 540 million are expected from various levels of government and authorities .

Málaga ’ s new hospital

More details have emerged about the new public hospital to be built in Málaga with the publication of the winning construction bid . The deal was awarded to Malaka NHM , a joint venture including the architectural firms AIDHOS Arquitec who specialise in hospital architecture , Estudio Lamela and engineers SENER and ARCS Estudios .

Hospital spaces will “ humanised ” while noise will be minimised , say the contractors , using state-of-the-art information and communication systems .
The building will have four towers with 15 floors , eight of which will be allocated to hospital wards with a total of 810 rooms , plus a further 108 spaces for day care . The hospital will offer four intensive care units , 42 operating theatres , 48 major outpatient surgery places , 189 outpatient consultation rooms and 31 special examination rooms , plus teaching and research areas .
The total investment in the five-year construction programme is presently estimated at € 380 million , with opening anticipated during 2027 .
