What’s On
Nerja History Group
The 2019-20 season of Nerja History group got off to a
cracking start on October 4, with a talk by our guest speaker,
Dani Muñoz entitled “The Faces of Spain: exploring Spanish
identities and Spain’s relationship to Europe in the age of
democracy 1978 - today”. Dani was born in Málaga, raised in
Nerja and lived for ten years as an Anglican Minister in the
Oxford Diocese - his use of English is wonderful and his
delivery was both informative and amusing.
On the following
Friday, some of us
went for a guided
visit, to the little
known town of
Moron de la
Frontera in the
Province of
Seville. We were
welcomed by
Rosario Andujar
Luna, the
Counsellor for
Tourism and we were each given a canvas shoulder bag with
brochures. After a guided walking tour, admiring the
architecture and the stunning church in the Convent of Santa
Clara, we walked up to the highest viewing point from where
we could see the remains of the castle in one direction and see
miles of stunning countryside. We also heard the legend of the
Rooster which is the town’s mascot.
Group is on Friday November 8 at 11am, with Guest Speaker,
author David Baird. Please see our website for the programme

Meetings are held in the Nerja Museum, Plaza España, Nerja
(above the underground car park) and there is a €6 donation
requested to cover costs. The week after the meeting, we
usually have a day trip to a place of interest and we now have
an annual multi-day trip, further afield in Spain, costs
announced at the meetings. The meetings are open to all and
are conducted in the English language.
We visited various
bars and
restaurants for
lunch and then re-
joined our coach
to go to the Museo
de Cal (Limestone
Museum), which
was fascinating.
We are so familiar
with seeing white
villages (Pueblos
Blancos) and
hearing the word Cal but most of us had little idea of how the
Cal is formed and what hard work is needed for the process.
The making of Cal has been a time honoured livelihood in this
area and this Museum shows the method of creating Cal
traditionally and passing on the craft to ensure that it survives.
In 2011, this tradition was recognised by UNESCO as a Cultural
Heritage of Humanity.
The Nerja History Group is for anyone interested in Spanish
History and meets each month between October and April
with meetings and trips. The next meeting of Nerja History
