Hello and welcome to the February edition of Soltalk. Well
we’ve got January out of the way and before we know it Easter
will be upon us! If only the politicians in the UK can decide
what’s happening with Brexit we could even start to look
forward to it!
of the best costumes are announced.
The most unusual part of Carnival is on the Sunday which sees
the ‘Entierro del boquerón’ (the burial of the anchovy or
sardine) marked by a procession down to Calahonda beach and
fireworks. People dress as mourners and carry the sadly
departed fish effigy along with much
wailing and sobbing. It is bizarre and very
amusing in a black comedy way!
February of course is the month for LOVE
with Valentine’s Day on February 14th. If
you are looking for a great range of
Valentines Cards you’ll find them at Smiffs
book and card shop, see page 49 for details.
Or could it be time to treat your loved one
to a romantic evening at the Haveli
restaurant? See page 47 for their special
Valentines menu. And page 53 you’ll find
our recipe for delicious strawberry
brownies which I am sure would delight
your loved ones!

Carnival as you can see. The poster’s artist,
José Alberto Jiménez Pastrana from Linares
in Jaén, has named his colourful creation
“Soñé con ser Nerja, soñé con ser
Carnaval”, I dreamed of being Nerja, I
dreamed of being Carnival. It reflects many
iconic spots in Nerja including the Nerja
Caves, which is a reminder of the Caves
60th anniversary this year. See page 16 for
more details of that.
The end of this month sees Carnival here
in Nerja. Held this year from Thursday,
February 28 until Sunday, March 3,
Carnival is one of my favourite events in
Nerja. Each year it gets bigger and better as
participants impress the crowds with their
spectacular costumes. The actual parade
takes place on Saturday March 2 starting at
5pm and ending with the awards ceremony
at Plaza de España. It takes the following route: starting in Calle
Jaen then Diputación, Plaza Cavana, Granada, Plaza de la
Ermita, Calle San Miguel, Plaza de Cantarero, Calle Pintada,
Puerta del Mar and finishes back at Plaza de España. After the
parade a big party is held in Plaza de España and the winners
