This colourful lecture is based on two decades’ personal
experience of a unique art colony. Nowhere else in the USA
have Native American, Spanish and Anglo cultures grown side
by side as they have here, and this diversity, along with the
glorious light of the high desert, has attracted artists since the
early days of the railroad. The history of this still-thriving
colony is rich, strange and full of remarkable characters,
including British visitors like DH Lawrence and famous
American artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe.
“Having spent five years
selling art on the city’s
Canyon Road (think Bond
Street with cowboy hats), I
can offer an intimate
picture of Santa Fe: it’s
inspiring, funny and
occasionally scandalous.”
About James Russell
The Arts Society Nerja AGM
James Russell studied History at Pembroke College,
Cambridge, but was galvanized into writing about art by a
lengthy stint selling contemporary paintings and sculpture in
Santa Fe, New Mexico. A passionate advocate of 20th century
painting and design, he writes and lectures widely.
On March 1, The Arts Society Nerja held their AGM, at the
beginning of their 25th Jubilee Year. It was attended by June
Robinson the Chairman of The Arts Society worldwide and
Billy Dawson, a Society Trustee.
His books include the popular 4-volume series Ravilious in
Pictures, about British watercolourist and designer Eric
Ravilious (1903-42), and other titles devoted to Paul Nash,
The Arts Society is a leading arts education charity which itself
is celebrating its 50 years of existence. They have a global
network of 385 local Societies, which bring people together
through a shared curiosity for the arts. The Societies provide
welcoming places – locally, nationally and globally – to hear
expert lecturers share their specialist knowledge about the arts.
There are over 90,000 members worldwide who enjoy these
lectures and who contribute to and preserve our artistic
heritage through volunteering and grants to Arts Projects
The Arts Society Vision
“The belief that the arts have the potential to enrich peoples’
lives is at the heart of everything we do. We want to be the
most inclusive and influential arts society”
The AGM was held in the Museo de Nerja meeting room and
attended by many members. Sadly we said farewell to Roberta
Kettel who has been a member since the Society formed 25
years ago. She held many positions on the Committee
including Chairman, Sponsorship and Travel.
A presentation of
flowers was made
to Roberta and
June Robinson
handed over the
new Arts Society
Gold Brooch
recognizing its 50
Years Celebrations
to her. Roberta is
leaving Nerja
shortly to live in
her adopted country of Denmark.
After the meeting we were entertained by Janet Bluck with her
tales of her experiences in Uzbekistan after the Russians left
and then we enjoyed a Tapas & Wine lunch at Hermes Café.
