RESPONSIBLE internally within subjects such as Sustainability , Safety , Cyber Security and Operational Knowledge , for example ASOG , DP and PMS to mention some . The technology we use has allowed us to quickly adapt to new training needs .
Learning-by-doing and reflection
Moving forward we want our employees to be conscious about their own competence and how we best learn and develop . Each manager ’ s contribution to this is vital in order for us to succeed . Competence development shall be beneficial both for the individual and the company .
We believe that we learn from training and courses , grow and learn from interaction with other people , but coming out on top as the most important part is learningby-doing .
When we tackle everyday challenges and opportunities , we gain competence over time . A focus on sharing what we know and providing feedback to each other is an important step in how we learn .
Apprentices / Cadets
Training and development take place every day on board our vessels and in our offices . As an example , we can mention apprentices and cadets , going through programs , being assessed and completing training programs . This is a good example of systematic competence development during a defined period which can be adopted and used also by other positions and in other training situations .
Solstad is one of the leading companies when it comes to training apprentices and cadets in Norway . Through the years , Solstad has recruited several hundred trainees and cadets . Studies show that a majority continue their career in the maritime industry , whether at Solstad or elsewhere .
This year , we recruited 42 Norwegian apprentices and 25 Norwegian cadets who signed on this summer . Today we have 95 Norwegian apprentices and cadets .
In addition , we have Ukrainian , Filipino , British and Brazilian cadets .
The apprentices and cadets joining Solstad receive structured training in a multi-cultural environment . They are closely followed up by the crew on board and get hands-on experience in the multitude of tasks involved in our operations .
Recruitment
We now have a shortage of qualified Norwegian AB ’ s . We have therefore started a program to recruit Ordinary Sailors ( OS ) for training to become ABs .
They are submitted a systematic training onboard and will be assessed by approved assessors in the Solstad Training Portal . We want everyone to take part in their own development , and in this case each person enrolled to the AB program can follow their progress online . After approved sea time and completed training they will be able to apply for an AB certificate .
