Allende y Socialismo

Union membership grew throughout the 20th Century and ultimately resulted in the election of South America’s first democratically-elected socialist leader, Salvador Allende. Following his election in 1970, President Allende adopted several pro-labor policies, including raising national wages and policies aimed at reducing national unemployment rates. Allende was a fierce critic of multinational corporate interests in Latin America. While speaking at the United Nations, he argued that foreign and multinational corporate interests were against the interests of workers. During his tenure as president, Allende completed the process of nationalization of the nation’s copper mines.
