According to conflict theorists, the family works toward the prevelance of social inequality within a society by reinforcing the status quo.

Through inheritance, wealthy families are able to keep their privileged social status for their members.

Conflict theorists also see the family as a social arrangement benefiting men more than women, as the mainstream societal norm up untill recently shows women in families often staying home and doing majority of work.

Families serve society by providing for the social control of the family and the socialization of the children. The individuals involved are given a socially sanctioned way to fulfill their physical and emotional needs. The family functions to meet emotional needs of members. Children have a stable environment and their needs are met through the family unit.
