In a report on NPR, Todd Grossman, CEO of Talkwalker Americas stated “Social media may have played a role in creating a kind of scandal-driven, as opposed to issue-driven campaigns.” He continued to state that other aspects of the election like Clinton’s emails, and Trump’s attitude towards women have been a dominating discussion instead of actual policy issues.

Although social media is used by both users and candidates to establish their views on given topics, a recent study conducted by a research team at Oxford University found that both candidates had automated accounts that were used to Tweet in favor of their campaign. From the first debate to the second, nearly one-third of pro-Trump tweets, and one-fifth of pro-Clinton tweets were from accounts by computers designed specifically to flood the timelines of users with their opinions.
