Social Media & Influencers Impact On The Fashion Industry 1 | Page 9
Social media has seen a
significant rise over the
past decade. The first
recognisable social media
site
was
Six
Degrees
which was created in 1997.
[Hendricks,
2013]
“It
enabled users to upload a
profile and make friends
with other users. In 1999,
the first blogging sites
became popular, creating
a social media sensation
that’s
still
popular
today.” [Hendricks, 2013].
Since
this
popularity,
social media sites such as
MySpace and LinkedIn gained
its importance in the early
noughties. YouTube came out
in 2005 which had a whole
new idea of communication.
Then 2006 comes, Facebook
and Twitter was released
and they still remain one
of the most popular sites
as of today; [Hendricks,
2013] alongside Instagram
and Snapchat. Today, these
sites are becoming a musthave in everyone’s lives,
whether you are in your
teens or in retirement age.
As of March 2016, 8 in 10
UK consumers had accessed
a social network in the
previous
three
months.
[Mintel, 2016]
But how does this affect
the fashion industry?
