Bette Blande Baranco describes what it was like to be apart of the first graduating class of the CB Powell School of Communications in 1971. Hailing from Newark, New Jersey Baranco was ecstatic to be brought into a school that was centered around communications, her major. She was quite well rounded and definitely distinguished herself from her graduating class. Tony Brown, host of Tony Brown’ s Journal, became first dean of the School of Communications( 1971-1974).
Bette’ s senior year at Howard University, she crossed Alpha Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Bettealso played a large role in getting WHBC started. WHUR was already a success, but students wanted more power over the station that was centered on their campus“ At the time, I just wanted to be on the radio. I didn’ t care about anymaterial things I just wanted to talk!” said Baranco.
Bette is currently retired and resides in Newark New Jersey with her family. She is an active member in the New Jersey chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority – Ashli Ferguson, writer.
