Michelle
Allen Executive Director of the Somerset-Pulaski County Convention & Visitors Bureau
Pulaski County has become the family I never knew I needed . Growing up as an Air Force Brat ( my dad served for over 25years ) my family never lived in one spot for very long . Once my father retired , he decided to choose Somerset , KY . Why you may ask , it was way better than up north , and we had just a few family members located in Somerset .
35 years later I now consider myself a true Pulaski Countian with tons of cousins . Somerset is considered The Capital of Lake Cumberland and its ever-growing popularity has increased my love for this community . Lake Cumberland welcomes 4 million visitors a year and those visitors , well , I ’ d call them my second cousins .
People ask what it is about the lake and the area you love so much ? What isn ’ t there to like ? We have 1,250 miles of pure nature and fun that surrounds Lake Cumberland . At any given time , anyone can find something to do outdoors in our beautiful community . We are the mountain biking mecca of Kentucky , The Houseboat Capital of the World , Car Cruise Capital of Kentucky , and I ’ d have to say we have the best dang fried pies at Haney ’ s Apple dale Farm east of the Mississippi .
This community has music , food , arts , and entertainment . I don ’ t need to travel anywhere else to get what I need . Well maybe to Lexington for Crumble Cookie , nevertheless Pulaski County offers a portal to anyone that wants to live in a smaller community with big town opportunities . We traveled from Germany , Florida and beyond making our roots here in Somerset . Now my boys can make their own roots while enjoying the fun of Lake Cumberland and the abundance of outdoor activities to keep them busy for a lifetime . visitors added more than $ 152.4 million to the local economy . Of the 383 lakes controlled or maintained by the U . S . Army Corps of Engineers , Lake Cumberland ranks 4th in the nation for the number of visitor hours . Over 1,500 houseboats float on Lake Cumberland and numerous power boats play in its waters .
Several of Kentucky ’ s record fish have been taken in the waters of Lake Cumberland , including : Brown trout ( 21 lb ) Lake trout ( 5 lb 5 oz ) Rainbow trout ( 14 lb 6 oz ) Sauger ( 7 lb 7 oz ) Striped bass ( 58 lb 4 oz ) Sturgeon ( 36 lb 8 oz ) Walleye ( 21 lb 8 oz )
Lake Cumberland is home to two Kentucky state parks : Lake Cumberland State Resort Park on its shore and General Burnside State Park on an island in the middle of the lake , along with many other docks and marinas such as :
Docks / Marinas : Grider Hill Marina ( Albany , KY ) Beaver Creek Marina ( Wayne County , KY ) Lake Cumberland State Resort Park ( Jamestown , KY ) Jamestown Resort & Marina ( Jamestown , KY ) Wolf Creek Marina ( Nancy , KY )
