Daniel Yang Art Creation « Hypermodular Reconstruction of Film Environments My thesis artifact is a reconstruction This artifact took over 250 hours to reach a Nostromo from “Alien” (1979). The artifact hours to complete the entire environment of Level B of the space ship called the is an explorable environment inside Unreal Engine 4 meant to be walked into to see the transitions between the movie set and my own input into the scene. I chose this subject because I wanted to master hypermodularity, understand film set design, and explore Sci-Fi lighting and atmospherics. I wanted to recreate the iconic movie set and incorporate my own imagination seamlessly into the environment. Doing research on topics such as Star Citizen’s hardsurface workflow and Ridley Scott’s innovative Sci- Fi set design allowed me to understand more of the thought process of how we perceive Sci-Fi elements in films. 30 ART CREATION vertical slice component and another 200 along with its research. As an aspiring environment artist, this project has helped me understand industry pipelines and develop an eye to capture different moods of a scene. I believe that games and films share a love for captivating environments, and having an understanding of the design process that goes into both fields enhances the potential of future projects.
