The Beyond: Design in Digital Trading Card Games
Since I was young, I’ve been enraptured
set of core mechanics that I was happy
the interactions, the deckbuilding—
became a factor. Constructing a game
with trading card games. The mechanics,
everything about them represented the
kinds of concepts that make me love
game design. My thesis gave me an
opportunity to build one of my very own.
I first developed the game through a long
series of paper prototypes over the span
of two months. Then I took another two
months to recreate the paper prototype in
Unreal Engine 4. The project went through
much iteration during development. The
paper prototype changed into essentially
three different games before I found a
