Understanding Physical and Visual Properties of Object Textures in
Order to Better Simulate Renders Using Unreal 4
My thesis is a study of the artistic process
foundation for texture creation. This
the Physically Based Rendering (PBR)
in previous methods. This was my first
for creating textures and materials using
system found in Unreal Engine 4. The
majority of my artifact was created in two
months; however, research and a draft
of my thesis paper were complete in the
months prior.
I was drawn to this topic because PBR
systems are scientifically and factually
based, providing artists with a concrete

removes some of the guesswork found
experience with a PBR workflow, so
the new terms, methods and software
associated with the rendering system
were a challenge to grasp. However, once
I got over the initial hurdles, I realized the
efficiency of the artistic system in Unreal
Engine 4.
