Chinese Fan Work Culture, the Symbiotic Partnership: A PC Games Circulation, Perception, and Development Loop
My Thesis examines how fan work culture influenced the circulation, perception, and community life of PC games in China. I chose this topic because I have been both a long-term PC gamer and an active participant in fan communities. I wanted to turn my personal experience into formal research while helping international developers better understand Chinese player culture.
To complete the project, I designed and distributed two Chinese-language online surveys for fan work followers and creators. I collected large datasets and analyzed the relationships between player motivations, spending behavior, and community engagement. I also studied six representative PC games and reviewed their fan activity on Chinese platforms to support the survey findings.
This project benefited me in many ways. I improved my skills in research planning, data analysis, academic writing, and longterm project management. I also learned how to transform a personal passion into structured professional work. In addition, I strengthened my ability to explain cultural trends to international audiences.
This project could be useful to the video game industry because it shows how narrative design, character appeal, and community creativity can support longterm player engagement. It also offered practical insights for developers who wanted to localize games for China, build healthier communities, and better support player-driven fan ecosystems.
