Aesthetic Emotions and the Lasting Resonance on Gamers: Profound Experiences

My Master’ s Thesis research investigates the empirical relationship between player motivation, experiential flow, and aesthetic emotions to understand their collective impact on post-play reflection. I chose this project because I was driven to move beyond the industry’ s traditional focus on high arousal entertainment, seeking instead to uncover how complex, cognitively demanding emotions contribute to a game’ s enduring cultural footprint.
Over the course of the last academic year, I conducted a rigorous quantitative study applying established frameworks such as Self Determination Theory, the Flow Short Scale, and the Aesthetic Emotions Scale to identify the specific drivers of meaningful player experiences. This process was immensely beneficial to my professional development, as it
allowed me to refine my skills in statistical analysis and experimental design while deepening my understanding of the psychological mechanics behind player advocacy. I learned that the perceived value of a game often rests on its capacity to elicit profound, reflective states rather than simple momentary satisfaction.
This research is highly relevant to the video game industry, as it provides developers with a strategic roadmap for creating long-tail engagement. By understanding the triggers of aesthetic emotions, studios can intentionally design for deeper meaning, ultimately fostering stronger emotional connections and longterm loyalty with their player bases.
