St Pancras Railway Station Brought to Life with Hyper-Modular Design and Dynamic Weather in Historical Recreation
For this project, I developed a highly detailed environment piece centered on the historical recreation of London’ s St. Pancras Railway Station. I specifically focused on the iconic, street-facing hotel facade, utilizing this complex structure as a primary vehicle to master the principles of hyper-modularity and architectural historical accuracy.
My primary goal was to bridge the gap between rigid historical preservation and the technical requirements of modern game engines. I chose this subject because the station’ s intricate Gothic Revival architecture provided the perfect challenge for testing modular workflows while maintaining a cohesive, large-scale aesthetic.
The development process spanned over ten months, during which I implemented a dynamic weather system in Unreal Engine 5. I designed the environment’ s
idle state to reflect a somber, rainy London day and integrated interactive triggers that allowed real-time transitions. One path intensified the sky with lightning and procedural umbrella spawning, while the other utilized the station’ s clock tower as a focal point for a fantastical, surreal weather transformation.
This project was immensely beneficial, as it sharpened my skills in Niagara particle systems, Blueprint logic, and material optimization. Furthermore, this work demonstrates significant value to the video game industry by showcasing how hyper-modular kits can drastically reduce draw calls and memory overhead without sacrificing the unique, non-repetitive visual fidelity required for AAA environments along with technique challenges with dynamic weather from scratch.
