Dynamic Transformation into an Original Monster

This thesis demonstrates my mastery in three key areas: Creature Concept, Dynamic Material, and Real-time Transformation. The project tells the story of a young boy who, under the influence of dark sorcery, transforms into a goatheaded monster.
Drawing inspiration from ancient sacrifice narratives, I designed an original creature centered on the imagery of the“ scapegoat,” aiming to reflect themes of twisted fate and moral ambiguity. This narrative direction laid the groundwork for the transformation design. Inspired by Yosuke Ishikawa’ s“ Werewolf Transformation,” I explored blendshape and morph target techniques to realize a real-time transformation process. Using Unreal Engine 5, I created dynamic material changes that enhanced both visual storytelling and emotional impact.
Through this, I developed a deeper understanding of real-time rendering and shader construction.
Over ten months of development, I followed a full production pipeline including 2D concept design, 3D modeling, topology, materials, hair systems, and animation. I compared multiple hair grooming methods and implemented the one best suited to this project. The most difficult challenge was balancing skeletal animation with morph targets and fixing vertex normal issues during the transformation.
This thesis marks my growth from a 2D concept artist into a hybrid 2D / 3D game artist, strengthening both my artistic vision and technical skills, and preparing me for future work in game development.
