Using Spatial Composition to Influence Player Tension
This thesis focuses on how space and level geometry in video games influence a person ’ s tension . By modifying a space ’ s density , size , and openness , a designer can effectively increase or decrease the player ’ s spatial tension .
My passion for classic horror games like Outlast and Silent Hill inspired this project . I adore how these games employ environments , from claustrophobic corridors to expansive plazas , to affect players ’ emotions .
I developed a single-player , horrorbased mod for Dying Light called “ A Way Out ”. In this mod , players navigate a laboratory building , aiming to escape through the underground sewers .
After two months of research and 200 hours of development using Dying Light Developer Tools , I conducted playtests and gathered data to match against a predicted tension curve that I created . The results of this research proved that spatial methodology is beneficial to modulate players ’ tension .
This study ’ s findings propose a methodology for assessing tension through spatial design , promising significant benefits for the gaming industry . These insights could help designers strategically craft levels to enhance immersion and emotional impact .
