Dynamic Atmospheres and the Style of John Sargent
During the past year , I completed this thesis project which contains three masteries including historical accuracy , style match , and dynamic atmospheres . My goal was to bring the Church of San Barnaba into real life and to then make the scene match John Sargent ’ s art style . I also made three dynamic atmospheres and can press keys to switch from one to another .
To achieve historical accuracy , I broke down the scene into modular kits . I found a new workflow to speed up the process of building the scene in 3ds Max and Unreal Engine 5 . I also learned how to break down the artist ’ s art styles . I finally achieved Sargent ’ s art style by using HLSL , combined with several shaders . I learned
a lot about the blueprint and implemented many functions by using it .
Instead of making realistic or Cel-Shading art styles , I chose to make a watercolor scene because many people have already done the first two art styles . This is also the biggest challenge I encountered while doing my thesis . I could find very little information , which meant I had to solve a lot of issues by myself . But in the end , I ’ m glad I solved the problem , and I am also looking forward to seeing games rendered in a watercolor style in the future .
