Armor of Ferdinand I Bust
For my Directed Focus Study project , I recreated the bust of the Armor of Ferdinand I , which was made by master armorer Kunz Lochner in the year 1549 . I chose this as my project to study the pipeline of texturing assets with complex metal engravings . This armor set offered a beautiful and detailed real-life example to follow .
After gathering high-quality reference images of the armor that had close ups of the engraving detail , I worked through tracing and cleaning up the engravings to be usable for the texturing . After modeling the armor pieces , I used the Maya retopology tool to trace where I wanted the engraving detail to be placed onto the mesh , which gave me more control over where the engravings would be located .
After those pieces were unwrapped , I formatted the clean traced engravings over them and used Marmoset to bake the texture from the extra geometry to the true unwrapped armor mesh . This process allowed for faster and more precise texturing accuracy .
To create this piece , I used 3ds Max and Maya for the modeling , Substance Painter and Photoshop for the texturing , and Marmoset for the rendering . The project in its entirety took me eight weeks , from idea generation to its completed renders . I learned a lot during this Directed Focus Study project and discovered new methods to consider when creating 3D models . It was a joy to learn something new and be able to showcase my love for intricately detailed art .
