Level Design
Best Practices : Using the Valence Theory to Guide Players
The primary goal of my thesis project was to demonstrate the effectiveness of applying the Valence Theory to level design in order to guide players and enhance their exploration experience . I aimed to create a non-linear level , featuring various valences that either attracted or repelled players , influencing their in-game decisions and behaviors . This approach allowed me to gain a better understanding of how valences can be effectively utilized in game design to shape player experiences .
I believed that understanding and effectively applying valences in level design could lead to more engaging and enjoyable gameplay experiences . The entire process included conducting research , building levels , collecting data , and analyzing results . It took approximately a year to complete .
This project allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the Valence Theory and its practical applications in level design . Moreover , it also provided me with an opportunity to develop my skills in game development , particularly with creating levels that cater to players ’ interests and preferences .
The findings of this project could be valuable to the video game industry . By utilizing the Valence Theory in level design , developers can create more engaging , immersive , and enjoyable experiences for players . Additionally , understanding the impact of different valences on player navigation and engagement can help developers make informed decisions when designing game levels , ultimately leading to better overall game experiences for players .
