Concepting for Hyper Modular Environments
My thesis artifact is a solarpunk town with dynamic atmosphere . The main goal of the thesis project was to turn 2D concept designs into 3D scenes . The scene can be switched between day , dusk , and night by pressing keys . Dusk expresses sadness and loneliness , while night is happy and dreamy .
Concepting , modeling , and lighting are essential skills for a 3D environment artist in the gaming industry . Combining them together and attempting to improve their effectiveness is worth studying .
I chose to study an environment concept to practice my design skills because an environment artist cannot only model based on provided images , but also needs to be able to design their own . My design is a large scene ,
and hypermodularity can help to save modeling time . I chose to use dynamic atmosphere because I wanted to show the appearance of the town at different times . Lighting and post-process volume are both worth studying for atmosphere creation .
After spending two semesters producing this thesis project , I believe I can successfully design scenes and create beautiful lighting and atmosphere . Hypermodularity helped me to learn how to create trim sheets and exercise my imagination to splice different models . Additionally , I learned how to create particles and gained a lot of blueprint knowledge .
