Best Practices for Guiding Players Through the Critical Path Using Leading Lines
“ Old Memories ” is a self-contained Fallout 4 mod that explores the various ways that a level can guide the player through the critical path using leading lines , specifically in the context of interior and exterior spaces .
Leading lines are one of the most fundamental conveyance tools in the level design toolbox . If a designer can understand how to use this in conjunction with other conveyance elements , it becomes a powerful asset in their design process .
This level was built over the course of six months . I chose this topic to deepen my understanding of conveyance fundamentals . As part of this process , I designed my level to be playable without any objective markers . This way , the player would more directly engage with the space rather than single-mindedly following quest markers .
In this level , the player reconnects with their past , searching through the ruins of their old family estate . Its focus is not on combat but on exploration . To encourage that exploration , there are no objective markers to guide the player .
