Rise and Fall of Ta Prohm
For my thesis project , I created a corner of Ta Prohm . This temple was located in Siem Reap , Cambodia , built in the Bayon style in the late 12th and early 13th centuries , and originally called Rajavihara .
There were three masteries in my project . The first one was to achieve historical authenticity , which allowed me to restore the site and simulate what it would have looked like when it was brand new , based on my travel photos and online research .
The second mastery was destruction , erosion , and decay . For this part , I generated the process of the building changing from pristine to decayed . Meanwhile , some parts of the building were destructed .
The third mastery was creating an animated environment . I transferred parts of the building into movable traps , which would interact with players in real time .
This was my first time creating a complex historical scene . I enjoy traveling to historical places and taking pictures for later memories . When I was working on the topic of my thesis project , I wondered : How amazing would it be if I could create the ruins I had been to before ? After a period of research , I settled on this site . The production process was not all smooth , as the temple was so eroded that I had to study other well-preserved temples around it to get more details . In addition , I struggled with the destruction mastery . But over time and with diligence , my project became complete . Now , I have mastered the process of breaking a complex ancient building down into relatively easy-to-finish parts , adding destruction and erosion effects to it , and turning parts of the building into movable traps . In the future , I hope to visit more places and summarize the forms and styles of different buildings to help me digitize real scenes faster and better .
