A Multidisciplinary Approach To Extract Learning Standard-Based Educational Content From Commercial Video Games
The success of the commercial video game industry has been a catalyst for game-based learning . However , educational games struggle to create and sustain player engagement due to the lack of connection between their gameplay and educational content , disrupting player immersion . Therefore , I proposed a systematic video game educational content extraction framework called DeCoAD — Decomposition , Connection , and Activity Design .

I chose this ongoing project to help cultivate the next generation of data scientists and engineers by enhancing education using a medium that popularly engages the modern youth , the commercial video games that we have today , and their inherent learningfacilitating capabilities and deep engagement techniques .
As part of a grant-funded project on Teaching Computer Science and Computational Thinking with Gaming , a multidisciplinary team of learning scientists and game developers used the framework to design game-based learning activities using existing commercial video games .
