Elemental Characters with Armor Destruction and Mounts
My thesis consists of three elemental characters with two stages of destroyed armor and mounts that match each character , showcased in Unreal Engine 4 . Project mastery pillars included mount matching , character elemental FX , and armor destruction . My goals were to understand and master the art of creating characters , to build a strong character creation pipeline foundation , to showcase stages of destroyed armor , and to recreate and match some of the elemental effects from the concept to push the idea of fantasy further . Character models and mounts were based off of concepts by artist Hue Teo . Base meshes were mocked up using concepts by Alexander Shatohin . I selected Hue Teo ’ s character concepts because they wove in well with my mastery pillars and showcased supernatural elements .
Total project duration was a little over 430 hours . From my thesis , I now understand how to pull elements from real world events into my work to improve overall quality ,
and I added new skills to my repertoire like creating particle FX for characters and learning the process of what goes into creating these effects efficiently and making sure they work with movement .
I also developed an understanding of different armor and damage types and how to recreate them in 3D in multiple ways . I was able to improve the quality and pace of my work , as well as my time management skills , as I had to create many high quality characters in a short amount of time . I now have a good understanding of not only how various types of armor fit together but also get impacted / damaged by different types of weapons . This knowledge will help me push the narrative of believability in projects where creating real-life armor damage is part of the game . I also was able to get a good grasp on understanding how various cultures matched their mounts according to different needs , and can apply my experience to making games which use mounts unique to its characters .
