Reconstructed Ruins with Fantasy Overgrowth
My thesis consisted of two scenes : a pristine scene depicting Al Khazneh , a Nabatean tomb in its original state , and a ruined scene reminiscent of fantasy rpgs in which Al Khazneh has been relocated to the floor of a forest . In the ruined scene , Al Khazneh is overgrown with fungi and weathered away over time , awaiting the next adventurers to discover it .
I have learned more about my strengths as an artist and how vital task prioritization is . After 517 hours of work , I expanded my knowledge of 3DS Max and the Substance Suite . I learned more about texturing , which rounded out my skillset . My thesis expanded my knowledge of Nabatean architecture and fine-tuned my research methods and documentation .
The goal of my thesis was to display the decay of a ruin that had been overgrown with fungi as well as to reconstruct that ruin to its pristine state . The scenes were believable , game-ready and developed using efficient industry workflows .
I chose this thesis because it allowed me to bring a love of historical research to my work . I chose fungi to focus on over more common foliage because — while fungi exist in games — the full breadth of fungi is hardly featured .
The research methods I developed could be beneficial to any studio with a project that requires a historical base . I have created large organic forms efficiently , while ensuring that they are not too heavy on their polycounts in order to increase performance . The project ’ s decay and destruction were informed by historical research , which increased the believability of my scenes as a whole — which games often strive for .
