As we approach the end of 2017, many of us will reflect on the year gone by and look forward to new beginnings. At the Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England, we extend our sincere thanks for all that you have done—and will continue to do—for our girls.
With your support, thousands of girls across our council have continued their journey to becoming strong, confident young women who are becoming leaders. We would like to share all of their successes with you, but it would be impossible in one newsletter! However there is one recent story that reminds us of what is most important, and why we do what we do here at GSSNE.
A long time Girl Scout Leader, Amy, was taking her troop on a trip to New York City. One of the girls in the troop, Rebecca, could not afford to join Girl Scouts, let alone a trip to New York, without financial assistance. But because of generous donors to our annual fund, Friends of Girl Scouting, we were able to provide assistance so Rebecca could participate. As her leader Amy stated,
“Without Girl Scouts, Rebecca would have never had the opportunity to have an experience like her trip to New York City. Without Girl Scouts, she would never had realized that she could go to college there. Girl Scouts builds character in girls like Rebecca—character that enabled her to know that despite her mom using food stamps and being homeless for a time last winter, she can still give back by volunteering at a soup kitchen with her Girl Scout troop. She would not have been able to dream of becoming a writer or an artist or anything beyond the four walls of the tiny apartment she shares with her mom.”
