Smithereens Press Chapbooks 'Rootless' by Jennifer Matthews | Page 31
Acknowledgements
Some of the poems in this chapbook were originally published
in Banshee, Foma & Fontanelles, Cork Literary Review, The Penny
Dreadful, Poetry International Web: Ireland, the Stinging
Fly, and Landing Places (Dedalus, 2010). “Breakfast with Bonnie” was
shortlisted for the Bridport Prize by Gwyneth Lewis. “Planning
Permission” was commended by Sarah Clancy in the Over the Edge
New Writer of the Year Competition 2013. Some of these poems were
written as part of a poetry exchange with Anamaría Crowe Serrano, to
whom I owe much gratitude for the encouragement and inspiration.
Special thanks to Róisín Kelly, Emily Davis-Fletcher, Michael
Sheehan, Marie Coveney, Donna Coogan, Michael Ray, Kathy D'Arcy,
Tom Moore, John Mee, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, and Cal Doyle for being
first readers and giving considered and poem-saving feedback. I'm very
grateful to Kenneth Keating and Smithereens Press for this publication
and the editorial guidance provided; to Matthew Sweeney for telling me
I wasn't daft for writing poetry; and also to Paul Casey and Patrick
Cotter who have provided me crucial opportunities for poetic
development. Above all, the support of Dave Griffin (the hero who
drove me to Monaghan and back) in making sure I always have time to
write has made this publication possible.
