Bulk Liquid Berths 2

Luke Gladwish informs readers of the current status of the BLB2 project at Port Botany.

The original project is now finished and our client, Sydney Ports Corporation, asked SMEC to stay on until end of November in a site management role, and assist in the co-ordination of multiple fit-out projects. These projects include:

1.Extension of a major steel structure on the berth;

2.Installation of a security access system;

3.Construction of private user pipelines.

The project was initially scheduled to last one year but it has been ongoing since January 2011.

The demand for bulk liquids and gases imported and exported through the current existing bulk liquids berth in Port Botany has grown significantly. The NSW Government gave planning approval for a second bulk liquids berth (BLB2) in 2008.

The existing bulk liquids berth (BLB1) at Port Botany has been in operation since 1979.

It is currently operating at > 90% capacity.

BLB1 & BLB2 are common user facilities and handle hazardous and non-hazardous bulk liquids and gases, which are transferred via pipeline to nearby private sector storage and distribution facilities.
