SMEC was out in force for the Australasian Tunnelling Society Sydney Group’s bimonthly Technical Session.
SMEC’s Tunnel Technical Principal Rob Nievergelt facilitated the presentation of the South West Rail Link Hume Highway Underpass (HHU) at the event. Rob co-presented with reps from TfNSW (Michael Barnfield) and John Holland (Joe O’Brien) - pictured above.
The South West Rail Link includes a new 11km twin track passenger rail line from Glenfield to Leppington via Edmondson Park and a major upgrade of Glenfield Station and bus/rail interchange.
The Hume Highway Underpass is a twin track tunnelled underpass 80m long, passing at a depth of just 5 m below the highway pavement. Major challenges to the project were the TfNSW and RMS requirements involving strict limits to carriageway settlements, no traffic disruption and high safety standards during construction.
The event was well attended with over 100 attendees from the tunnelling and broader civil engineering industry. The presentation highlighted the successful execution of the Project and put SMEC’s technical expertise and client focus on display.
