ITS, which include 5G technologies, connected and automated technology, cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoT), transit technology & sensors, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication, vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P) communication, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, have a predominant role to play to respond to user demands focusing on services rather than infrastructure.

5G

South Korea launched the world’s first 5G network in April 2019. The Korean government has listed 5G as one of the 13 growth engines for the Korean economy, along with: big data, next generation telecommunication, artificial intelligence, smart cars, drones, health care, virtual/augmented reality, intelligent robots, intelligent semiconductors, cutting-edge materials, innovative medicines and renewable energy. The Ministry of Science and ICT is the Ministry that is tasked with overseeing the standardization of 5G and controlling the market to foster 5G technologies for the domestic companies.

Slovenia has also been a leader in developing infrastructure for electric vehicles. Since 2017, Slovenia’s highways have featured electricity chargers every 50 kilometers. In 2018, Slovenia signed a trilateral agreement with Austria and Hungary to build a testing center for self-driving cars, which opened in 2019. In November 2019, the Jožef Stefan Institute signed an e-mobility cooperation agreement with a Norwegian institute to collaborate on new technologies.
